How to connect this new-to-us printer

Our little animal shelter has just inherited a Xerox Workcentre Pro C3545. We are not networked, so it will need to connect to a computer I am about to order. I have only used units this size on a network, so I have no idea how to connect it to a computer to be a printer as well as a copier. We don't have a contract, so we are doing this all on our own. Can somebody tell me what we need to hook this puppy up? Thank you in advance!

Re: How to connect this new-to-us printer

You can only print via network by default, unless it has the USB kit, if that is the case, then see here.

Else:

You will need to hook the computer to it via a crossover cable or by a cheap hub/switch/router to build a small network for a printer and the PC.

The crossover cable is the quickest cheapest method, but we can't give directions beyond the generic since the Operating system is an unknown.

Connect Windows 7 to Printer via Cross over cable

Note

For Gigabit Ethernet or token ring networks, you will need a slightly different kind of crossover cable. For more information, contact a cable manufacturer.

From the Windows 7 client Workstation do the following;

  • Click start/control panel/Network and Sharing Centre.
  • Under “view you active connections” click the hyperlink below “Access Type: Internet” on your active connection.
  • Click the properties radio button.
  • Select Internet Protocol version 4 and click the properties radio button.
  • Select “Use the following IP address” and enter the following;

IP Address: 10.1.1.1

Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

Gateway: [leave-it-blank]

DNS Servers: [leave-it-blank]

  • Click ok and close the control Panel.

From the Printer

  • Work with your printer vender to access the tcp/ip v4 settings of the network card and enter the following;

IP Address: 10.1.1.2

Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

Gateway: [leave-it-blank]

DNS Servers: [leave-it-blank]

Re: How to connect this new-to-us printer

Thank you for your quick reply. The computer (probably Lenovo ThinkCentre M700 or M900 Tiny) we are ordering will have Windows 10 Pro 64. Not sure if the printer has a USB kit or not (I'm not on site to look). Is a crossover cable something easily purchased? Who carries them?

Thanks so much for your help!

Literally any computer store has crossover cables, or they should. It looks exactly the same as a regular network cable, just 2 wires inside are moved around.
