Phaser 8550 DP inconsistant blurry prints

We have a Phaser 8550 DP-2 printer with fewer than 30,000 prints. The prints look as if some of the dots have been shifted down. It affects all colors. It almost looks blurry but you can see the individual dots that are shifted down and they appear sharp. About every 8 pages I will get a clean print. This happens with: Xerox paper, clean power, after cleaning plastic blades, and running through print quality troubleshooting solutions from printer.

Re: Phaser 8550 DP inconsistant blurry prints

Hello MarkGHC,

The following is one of the problems that exhibits the symptoms you mentioned.  I know that you said you ran through the print quality troubleshooting solutions, but I just want to be sure that you came across this one below.

Solution : Clean Ink Smears
1.Press the [Up] or [Down] arrow button on the Control Panel to select [Troubleshooting] on the Display Screen, and then press the [OK] button.
2.Press the [Up] or [Down] arrow button to select [Print Quality Problems], and then press the [OK] button.
3.Press the [Up] or [Down] arrow button to select [Remove Print Smears], and then press the [OK] button. The printer will clean the ink from the rollers by running several sheets of paper through the printer.
4.If the smears are still displayed, repeat steps 1 through 3 up to three more times.

NOTE: If the problem continues, make sure you are using a supported paper type.

Re: Phaser 8550 DP inconsistant blurry prints

Hi John,

Yes I originally ran the “Clear ink smears” function 3 times even though the print doesn’t look smeared it looks as if dots are shifted. I have since ran it 3 more times as suggested. My ratio of bad to good prints has changed. However, this might just be a temporary coincidence, I don’t know. I am still getting poor quality prints… Blurry, Good, Good, then Blurry for the next 6 test prints… I forgot to mention that I have also swapped out Maint. Kit from my previous post. I could run the Clear smear 10 times if you think it would make a difference, but I get bad prints followed by good ones... which doesn't seem like a smear issue to me.

Re: Phaser 8550 DP inconsistant blurry prints

Can you tell me about the type of jobs that you are printing when this happens?  Is the entire image blurry or only a portion of it?  What software application(s) does this happen with?  How are you submitting the print jobs?  Does this happen with copy jobs?

Sorry for all of the questions, but it will help define what the problem is.

Re: Phaser 8550 DP inconsistant blurry prints

It doesn’t seem to matter what the source of the print job is. The printer was printing “Blurry” from MS Office over a network connection. But since I have had it I have been testing prints from the Office Demo > Continuous print menu on the printer. This printer does not have a built in copier (if I understand the question right) The level of shift is consistent down the entire page. One page will look to have some dots shifted slightly and another page will look almost streaky because the dots are off by about half an inch. It seems to be a consistent shift per page. If it’s off a half inch, it’s off a half inch on the entire page, if it’s off just slightly it’s off just slightly the entire page.

Re: Phaser 8550 DP inconsistant blurry prints

Sometimes, oil from drum gets on the drum emitter wheel causing it to not spin at the correct speed.  If you remove the drum fan, you'll be able to remove the cover on the emitter wheel and clean it.  There is no "home" position on the drum so if you want to remove the wheel, it makes it easer to clean.  I've found this to clear up most cases of dots of print being where they shouldn't be.

Re: Phaser 8550 DP inconsistant blurry prints

Thanks for the tip dmaxwell. Unfortunately I’m having trouble getting the cover off. I removed the fan and released the 5 clips holding the cover but it does not want to release. I don’t want to pull too hard because I don’t know what the resistance is from. It feels like I might be pulling on wires. My manual doesn’t go into any detail on the drum emitter…

Re: Phaser 8550 DP inconsistant blurry prints

The wires for the drum heater go through the cover and that can make it a bit hard to remove.  I think there are three wires, black, white and red.  It's kind of a pain but the cover will come off if you work it gently off.
