mltravers ... does your solution still work with your FIOS service? I just switched to FIOS and followed your suggestion below, and I still get SMTP errors. Please reply with any updates. Thanks!

If you can control your firewall, this should work.  I have an ActionTec MI424-WR router on Verizon FIOS. My 6108 MFP printer is set up with a fixed internal IP address. I set the 6180 MFP to use Port 25 for SMTP. I then went into the router and created a rule (Firewall Settings/Port Forwarding/Create a New Port Forwarding Rule/Specify IP) to take all Port 25 traffic and forward it to Port 587 for that IP address. Open the "Application to Forward" drop down list and select "Custom Ports". The set  Source Ports = Specify/587, Destination Ports = Specify/587; Forward to Port =Specify/25. I tested it with my printer after Verizon blocked Port 25 and it works fine.  Most other residentail routers should have similar capabilities. The procedure may be a little different from router to router.

If you are in an institutional environment, the IT department may be willing to create a similar port forwarding rule. Since the port forwarding is going the printer device, it should not pose a significant security risk since the capabilities of the printer are limited in terms of network operaiton.

Most customers are using external servers like Google or such. Since Xerox will not proceed to make a SPAR for this product the only way around this it to install the SMTP service on your Desktop or server and relay your scan-to-email settings to that server in which it will send that information to your e-mail server with the proper authentication and port settings. I find this the best way to do scanning in some network environments.

cant you create an internal rule in your firewall ?

I have the same problem with port 587.  You should be able to put in any port you wish.  587 is very popular and needs to be allowed.  Xerox please fix this. 

Relaying is not an option.  Crackers and Spammers love when people allow relaying on their servers.

Any other fixes/patches?

Currently there are no fixes for this. You can bypass the port 587 if you use a SMTP Relay. Microsoft XP and 2003 have this capaility and I would recommend to research this a little. We use this in our office to only allow the relays from our Xerox devices. Hope that puts you in the right track.

Trying to setup scan to email for a client. From what I can tell, her SMTP server uses port 587. The CentreWare will only allow port 25 or ports 5000-65535. Any ideas?
