I had this problem on our XEROX WorkCentre 7545. I updated to the latest firmware (061.121.222.06508), but this still didn't solve the issue. I called XEROX and they emailed me a small update file which took about 5 minutes to apply. Then I was able to scan to a SMB share on Windows 2012 using port 445.
....good to know but strange to hear! In italian web site the latest one is 061.121.222.06508:
The tenchician who came here yesterday installed 061.121.223.31800 (perhaps is released on jan) that is older than the version you suggest (061.121.224.18802). Who knows why? :(

Software version numbers are different due to languages and some models can even vary with features that are critical to their country where it is sold.
Software releases also have accumlated patches to a specific level or release time. These factors allow the software for one country to be different from another.
The majority of the operating system is very similar but the numbers can vary depending on the last adopted version.
Thank you Mitch for your clarification. Anyway I cannot accept that an update that has been released in 2014 has not yet a fix for scan to windows 8 shared folders, while a cheaper HP Officejet 8500 ( 200 euro) can do this without any issue. Am I wrong?
