Re: AOL SMTP - Less secure apps

After the Firmware update to my Xerox® VersaLink® C405DN MFP, the Scan to E-mail using AOL ceased to function. To date it still doesn't work.

Actual Version: 68.64.51
Installed on: 06/11/2020 - 09:56

Having tried all settings

Xerox® VersaLink® C405DN MFP

AOL Username:  full email address

Password:  account password (tried Desktop sync, Android Sync and normal password)

SMTP Server:  smtp.aol.com

SELECT A DIFFERENT SERVER: option never returns if the XEROX selection is used (CRASH and hang)

mx-aol.aol.Yahoo.dns.net or what ever the wierd adress is the appears.

Port: 587

Encryption:  STARTTLS, STARTTLS as needed, and SSL/TLS (as stated for AOL)

Funny that a connection is capable of presenting connection OK using no password, with password and user (shows user or password wrong) I suspect it is the encryption.

I've tried

DESKTOP Sync password from AOL

MY STANDARD PASSWORD from AOL

ANDROID SYNC Password from AOL

and nothing works. Xerox dumps the SMTP authentication settings with every failure and it must be set-up again and again. This is in it self a pain.

My router can connect and send email, using the DESKTOP SYNC PASSWORD from AOL

SMTP Server:  smtp.aol.com

Port: 587

Encryption:  SSL/TLS (as stated for AOL)

My Mobile Telephone works with Microsoft Outlook and the ANDROID SYNC PASSWORD from AOL

Same settings as the Router

My Laptop works fine using  microsoft Outlook with the STANDARD PASSWORD from AOL and the same settings (in fact it finds the settings on its own after adding E-Mail adress, then requests the password).

This proves the settings and passwords work. So what is XEROX doing with Scan to E-mail that is quirky when using AOL?

AOL SMTP - Less secure apps

Product Name: Other - specify product in post
Operating System: Not Applicable

AOL has implemented security similiar to Google's "Allow Less Secure Apps" for SMTP (Email).

Here is my valid setup:

Email Address:  xxx@aol.com

Username:  full email address

Password:  account password

SMTP Server:  smtp.aol.com

Port: 587

Encryption:  STARTTLS

You also need to make changes to the Security settings of the AOL account:

"If you use AOL two-step verification or an older email app, you may need to use an app password to access AOL Mail."  Create and manage third-party app passwords
