Re: Compression artifacts on scanned documents (WorkCentre 6015NI)

The machine is using the latest firmware available, and I've tested with both the TIFF and TTN2 options.

I'll contact the support center to seek for advice on the issue.

Thanks for the reply.

Re: Compression artifacts on scanned documents (WorkCentre 6015NI)

Hi quitaiskiluisf,

Thank you for using the Support Forum. Please make sure that you have the latest firmware loaded on your machine.  The firmware version 01.00.23 includes a change in the default TIFF type for scanning to TTN2.  This may help with the problem you are seeing .  If this does not help please consider contacting your support centre for further assistance.

Thanks,

Compression artifacts on scanned documents (WorkCentre 6015NI)

Product Name: WorkCentre 6015

Hi!

I'm using a WorkCentre 6015NI to scan some documents. The documents are being scanned in grayscale, 300dpi, TIFF file format, and being saved to a network share on another computer. It's been working great, except for an issue with the quality of the scans.

I've selected the TIFF format because I needed the images without any kind of compression, as they'd be post-processed by another software before being archieved, and compressing it in this stage would introduce unwanted "noise". The problem is that it doesn't seem to be working as expected. The scanned documents show a great deal of JPEG compression artifacts around the edges of lines. The image compression level is set to "Low" and changing the compression level only makes the artifacts worse.

The very same compression artifacts show up in all file formats available (PDF, TIFF and JPG files). In fact, the same page scanned in each of this formats has very similar filesizes (with at most 5kb of difference change between them), and it makes me think that they're all JPEG encoded and, at the end of the process, stored in a different container. Also, when I run the "identify" utility, from ImageMagick package, it tells me that the TIFF file has "Compression: JPEG" (and also warns me that the file has some invalid content in it, like some comment string not being null terminated as they should be, by specification).

This artifacts don't show up when I connect the printer directly to a computer through the USB cable and perform the scan through the Windows WIA interface. The problem is that there's no computer near the printer (as all printing and scanning operations are done through the network), so, I need to make network scans work without this artifacts through the network.

Am I doing anything wrong or is this a bug on the printer's firmware? Has anyone else experienced this?
