Phaser 8860 interfering with dialtone

Good quesion. I intended to clarify that in my original post.

I discovered the issue when I connected my server's fax modem to the line. That, of course, made me suspect my server's modem, and I spent a couple of hours testing & troubleshooting the server's configuration before I finally removed it and tested the Phaser alone on the line.

That is when I discovered that, regardless of whether any other device is attched to the line, the Phaser interrupts the ring midway through the first ring without actually answering the call if either of these is true:

1. It is set to answer on two or more rings, or

2. It is set to not receive faxes.

If I disconnect the phone line from the Phaser and connect a telephone instead,multiple rings work correctly.

I have a Phaser 8860MFP connected to a fax line. When I set it to receive inbound faxes by answering on the first ring, it generally picks up the call; however, when I set it to answer on the second ring, it does not pick up the call but instead terminates the ring; that is, there is one quick/half ring, then the line goes dead. I have tried numerous times from other fax machines and from my telephone, and the behavior is always the same. Even if I configure the Phaser 8860 to not receive any faxes, it will allow only one quick ring, then there are no more rings, and after about 10 seconds, the line beeps and the call is terminated.

I have verified that this is not a line problem by connecting an analog telephone in place of the Phaser 8860 , and it rings just fine. I tried a firmware update to the current version two days ago, with no change in behavior.

Please do not jump to the conclusion that I should just set it to answer on the first ring. The reason this is a critical problem is two-fold:

1. Even when set to answer on the first ring, it is not always fast enough to answer before it kills the ring.

2. More importantly, this fax must coexist on the same line as another device. My intention is to configure my server-based fax modem to answer all calls (thus receiving faxes into e-mail) and to allow PC/server-based sending of faxes. This all works and has been tested--except that as soon as I connect the Phaser back to the line, even when it is configured to not receive faxes at all, it allows only a single short ring (which is too quick for the server to sense the ring and answer the call), then somehow interrupts the ring without actually answering the call.
