The 5225 Xerox to me is a strange animal. Isn't there an applicaiton that I can put on my Windows Vista that I launch that can control the scanner in the 5225? Any ole cheap HP scanner does that with no problem. I am really lost with the way Xerox built this machine to be used. Does one always have to initiate the scan from the front panel of the printer? I only have 2 Vista PC's and a router so I don't have MS servers and mail handlers in my home. Any ideas to get my jib in the wind will certainly help.
i am not sure, but to do that , you need to connect with an USB cable to speak to the machine from the laptop...
why not configure networkscanning? so you can scan directly to a folder on the pc without the need of extra software? you can scan to smb or ftp folders
My thanks Fabio. I think I've attempted just about everything but nothing I try gets very far. I think my problemis in trying to figure out where the small network capability actually lie in the absense of MS servers which I don't have. I will try network scanning...but haven't much hope. I'll will keep you posted.
SMB Netowrk scanning will work fine without servers. All you need to get this to work is:
-A shared folder.
-A local user with full permission to this folder
-No firewall or a firewall with an exception for Windows Printer and File Sharing (SMB protocol on port 139).
-A static IP address on your computer (not necessary but highly recommended in the absence of a local DNS server).
Then you just need to setup scan defaults and a file depository on the Xerox that has:
-The static address of the computer
-The share name
-The user with permissions to the share.

Why would you want to initiate the scan from your pc? You have to put the document into the Xerox - doesnt it make more sense to just hit Start and start the scan there.
Network scanning is relatively easy to setup. You can set it up from your PC using a browser. You don't need server software - just a shared folder on a pc and a dream.
Bits, after I thought about it, yes, it makes sense to initiate it from the front panel. I did get this working! Finally. After it is setup, it is fast and works great. I can't say the scan quality is very good. How do I improve the quality of the scan? My cheap HP scan quality is better than this Xerox by a mile. I'm using the PCL6 drivers for Vista and every concievable option set to high quality. I'l like to hear your comments on good looking, solid scanned images. This 5225 does not support scanning to JPEG which is a bummer.
Hey Tech, this is finally working, scanning to network. I cannot however scan to PC since the printer cannot see the workgroup like it used to. It worked fine a couple of days ago. I'm running PCL6 drivers and I can see my other PC and router on the network just fine. I cannot see the printer however and it is set to WORKGROUP just as all my machines are...ghost in the machine I suppose...any idea how to get the printer to see the workgroup? Don't get me wrong, I can scan to network and print to it just fine so it 'is' on the network and functions properly that way. It cannot see the NetBios names however. I used to all the names and all my folders from the front panel...no more...Something changed but I have no idea what.
The Scan to PC works via the Xerox Scan Utility installed on each PC. The utility points to your Xerox on your network and then "registers" by creating a scan template on the Xerox similar to how a Template Pool would work, but instead of a single server with many templates, you have multiple Desktops each registering a template. This is a "live" process, so at any point if the Xerox Scan Utility on your PC's cannot comunicate with the MFP, then the templates won't be available. I've never run this setup on a 5225, so this is all based on how this works with an 8560 MFP. Essentially, across all models, the xerox scan utiility should function the same.
I would start by checking to make sure the Xerox scan utility is running at startup. Try it with no PC firewall enabled to see if that is the cause. Reboot the Xerox. If none of these work, uninstall and re-install the xerox scan utility, then watch it for a few days and see if it drops off again and try and identify the conditions in which this happens.
More great ideas Tech. Yes, the Scan Utility is alive and well in the TSR (terminate and stay ready) lower right toolbar in Vista. I've launched it before but I cannot understand what it does. It appears to me that you can't do anything with it. There's no 'go' button on it. I've studied it and I must be brain dead but I really cannot understand what it does. There's a blank box on the left and a place or two to put a base file name and folder but I have no idea what it's asking for. So that's a no help.
The network was visible from the front panel just as sure as life. My workgroup showed up, then my PC then all the folders...so I'm a bit baffled.
I'll admit that I'm lost as to understanding why a template would stop a netbios name from being seen...But I'll give it a try...Thanks again!
We are also having an issue with scanning. We recently have set up a workcentre 7525 and we are trying to configure the scanning capability. We went to centreware interent services and after talking to technical support at Xerox I am clear on what values I needed in the properties and services. What I think is failing is towards the end of the configuration he had asked me to select either ip address or hostname and if I had the ip address this would be the address of the pc. So later when I did this there were the 2 option buttons, selected ip address, but there was no field for the static address of the computer. I proceeded it went to as share name which I gave and I know I entered the correct login and password. However, when scanning the report prints out it says that it failed to connect. I know it is not the login so I think it is because I did not provide the computer ip address. Where do I do this?
