Tinted white pages when scanning with DM 152

Product Name: Other - specify product in post

First time user of DM 152.  When I scan a basic white page document with text the PDF image has gray tint on the white area of the original scanned document.  When the pdf is printed, the printer imitates this gray tint for the entire page.  Using extra toner and ink.

 

How do I get white to scan white, not tinted ?
