The hand writing is what is breaking it. The embedded OCR does not work on handwritten, so if the page has it, the option will be touch and go.

 

The OCR in the device is from Nuance Omnipage. And obviously the version in an MFP would be more limited than their own software solution, else they would quickly put themselves out of the market.

Why does OCR not always work

I"m scanning documents that are paper forms containing both typed letters as well as hand written words. I have tried many different scanning settings on our Workcentre 7855 and selecting the OCR option whiling scanning in PDF of PDF/A format. Unfortunately the resulting PDF is not searchable. Can you indicate what scanning settings would hinder the resulting PDF to become searchable or what other reasons could cause the PDF not to become searchable?
