"Unable to connect" when trying to configure email settings

I just got a brand new xerox workcenter 3615 and I am trying to configure the mail settings. However, the status stays at unable to connect. The machine is on and properly connected to the network. The mail server is also configured to accept emails from the printer. I've tried with both local mail servers, but the status just says "unable to connect'. I've tried with no authentication and with authentication, but the status doesn't change.
Is there a log available where I can look for the cause? What can I do?
