We sell Fuji Xerox machines and a client bought a metered toner from ebay and installed into their machine. It came up with invalid cartridge error - allows them to print one page before locking up the machine. They called us to correct the problem. They then tried aftermarket compatibles but still shows up with "invalid cartridge". We have only ever sold them OEM consumables and now i am loathe to install a new retail OEM cart into the machine and find that it writes to the chip and also comes back reporting that it is an invalid chip. I did call Fuji Xerox helpdesk here in Australia and they just sent me the users guide manual which is no help. I have been told that it need a diagnostic software suite to log into the machine to revert it from metered to non metered mode. Any help greatly appreciated.

The diagnostic software is only obtainable by certified techs, If you are a re-seller you should have access to one of them.
The printer doesn't write to the chip, it reads it. The printers are sold blank, they don't care if they are metered vs sold until you load the first cartridge, they lock themselves to that one.
In this case, I would assume they bought the toner from from a different region.
The difference is the chip inside of them. There are three chips. The chip identifies the machines contract type.
#1 - " SOLD/ Regular " - You own this machine. No Contract. No DMO/Dmoso.
#2 - " Metered " - Cost per Copy, Renting Machine, Contract with Xerox
#3 - " DMO, Dmoso " - includes the marketing, sales and servicing of Xerox products, supplies, and services in (Latin America, Mexico, Brazil) the Middle East, India, Eurasia and Central-Eastern Europe (Russia area) and Africa.
I will try the OEM cartridge. The machine will not destroy the chip. This type of machine can be converted just with a PEK (Product Enablement KEY).
Also, you should have your client report the seller to eBay. Metered supplies remain the property of Xerox until consumed.
