New here and frustrated - no driver for El Capitan

Hi All,

 

I am a very frustrated owner of a Workcentre 6015NI.  I recently upgraded my iMac to ElCapitan OS X 10.11

 

Little did I know that it would render my printer unusable.  Ihave found some possible workarounds on the net but it requires me to disable a fundamental security aspect of the new OS X.  Perhaps I will but I prefer not doing that.  

 

My greatest disappointment is in my attempts at contacting Xerox to find out what schedule there is for a new driver.  On hold. call dropped. Transfered but not to a human only a recording that says send them email at printsolutions@xerox.com.  Which is promptly bounced back to me as undeliverable.

 

Xerox is doing a heck of a job annoying me right now.  I could almost forgive them not having the driver ready even if it is the second largest OS in the world and it's release was known for a while.  Maybe they were too busy generating them for other printers they sell.  But the lack of customer interface to help me decide how to proceed is not acceptable.  Well I am unlikely to purchase more Xerox products at this moment in time and sure don't need printer supplies.  After all - I can't print.  I'm betting that piece of junk laser printer from HP replaced with this Xerox has a released driver.  Just a guess.

To be fair, Apple takes at least partial blame. And Xerox isn't the only company struggling to keep up.

 

Almost every major OSX update has in some way broken something in printing. Starting with 10.6.8 they had the "Printer Paused" issue caused by the OS not correctly overwriting files needed.

 

Then there was OPC end of life, which is caused by OSX incorrectly deciding that since it got no SNMP response from the OPC in a printer (Because the part doesn't exist) that it needs to be replaced (OPC=Optical Photo Conductor = Drum = Xerographic module)

 

Then 10.7 I believe had the CUPS filter failures.

 

Starting with 10.8 they changed how Bi-directional communication can be used with 3rd party suppliers, then in 10.10 they started to really enforce it, and the 3rd parties still haven't fully gotten a way to restore those lost functions.

 

The workaround is really simple too in this case, those other issues were an absolute terror to resolve, this one can be done in under 5 minutes with absolutely no knowledge of the OSX setup. It isn't like you are breaking the Mac in any way, you temporarily disable a new feature to run a file you likely already have had in use with no issue for years.

 

So, The new security stuff added killed the ability to install some drivers due to System Integrity Protection (SIP), aka “rootless” mode

Really, the same sort of thing MS does where if the driver is not digitally signed it doesn't get installed. (Win 10 , Server 2008-2012)

Turns out, you can disable it, and it is pretty similar to how it is done in MS OS’s.

 

  1. Shut off Mac
  2. Hold down <Command> + <R> + <Power button>
  3. Select Utilities > Terminal
  4. In terminal type csrutil disable; reboot
  5. Install the required Xerox driver from the 10.10
  6. The above will say it will reboot, but it won't, so reboot when completed
  7. When back up, install the printer per preferred method
  8. Shut off Mac
  9. Hold down <Command> + <R> + <Power button>
  10. Select Utilities > Terminal
  11. In terminal type csrutil enable; reboot

 

So now the Mac is back to normal locked down mode, driver/software should still work.

That workaround will work for any brand, the only step to change is for the actual driver file.

A good resource to keep in mind for the update to 10.12, is this link here, which is really good at keeping track of OSX compatibility so you can be aware of things lost by the updates and not just what is gained.

Thanks for the response.  I would give a try at your fix but first I think I am replacing this iMac. it is 6 years old and I can't imagine it will be compatible with all the new OS coming down much longer.  Plus the HD is too small and memory lacking.  And slow processor.  I could cobble and install more stuff but seems like bailing out a leaky boat. 

 

After I am up and running on a new computer I will give your suggestion a try.  And BTW my greatest disappointment with Xerox was the runaround on the phone and being given a non-functional email address.  It is very frustrating when you can't talk to someone.  Had i reached someone who just told me sorry, we are working on it and hope to have it in X time I'd have been OK with them.

Joe,

 

I tried your solution.  It worked.  One note I did not need to do step 7 "add printer" as it was already in there as default.  I suspect I could have bypassed the install of printer drivers as well.  Really not sure but the steps I followed that restored my printer were:

 

 

  1. Shut off Mac
  2. Hold down <Command> + <R> + <Power button>
  3. Select Utilities > Terminal
  4. In terminal type csrutil disable; reboot
  5. Install the required Xerox driver from the 10.10
  6. The above will say it will reboot, but it won't, so reboot when completed
  7. Already installed - !!!!
  8. Shut off Mac
  9. Hold down <Command> + <R> + <Power button>
  10. Select Utilities > Terminal
  11. In terminal type csrutil enable; reboot

 

Perhaps since I was already using the 10.10 version and simply reinstalled the same thing.  I don't know.  All I know is those are the steps I took and it is working now.
