How about examples of working hostnames? "home", wrong. smtp.google.com, wrong.
Anything can be a working hostname, but you certainly can't use SMTP.gmail.com to name your printer, you can certainly use it as the hostname of your mail server when using a gmail account. Anything can be a hostname for the printer, but since it doesn't utilize Windows Networking and or NetBIOS/TCP/IP, it won't get verified unless using DHCP on the LAN within a domain.
I have outward ip 201.204.149.143, printer is at 196.168.1.124 . Should I look into how to set this in my DNS, which btw is dd-wrt.
Your IP and DNS have nothing to do with each other, the IP of your router (default gateway) is typically the primary DNS, your ISP will provide some, and you can always use 8.8.8.8 (Google owns it) And DD-WRT is certainly not related to DNS, it is a custom firmware people install on router
Practical help goes a long way. Thx. please copy to mwjwest at g m a i 1 d0t com.
It's a forum, not chat support, nobody is going to email you help
7845 can be setup to gmail via
Hostname = smtp.gmail.com
Port = 587
Encryption = STARTTLS (Not the one that says STARTTLS(If available)
Authentication = full email and password, you cannot have 2 factor authentication enabled and dependant on firmware, might need to enable "Use less secure apps"
Set your primary DNS as 8.8.8.8 (Because Google absolutely can find gmail using smtp.gmail.com
And make sure thetime and dat is within 3 minutes of current or you will fail authentication due to the printer being a device that uses HTTPs.
As for getting an error about a domain name when doing scan to email, it just means something needs to be set on the printer, MSHOME, MSHOME.local, WORKGROUP, WORKGROUP.local will all work just fine

Hi jakes.
I am sorry that you are not pleased with the solutions that we provide. This is a peer to peer forum and the moderators only engage after a post has not been responded to by the members in the community. We try to assist by directing members to the product knowledge bases so that 1) they can read the steps to the solution and 2) they are aware of the other resources available for locating a solution. Many of the members are not as familiar with the plethora of content available in the product knowledge bases. Our call centers and support staff use the very same knowledge bases to assist when calling for support. The solve rate using the knowledge bases is very high. In most cases the solution is available within the KBs, just as it is for this original post. Sometimes we may recommend that the member call support if we require more detail to troubleshoot the issue.
We strive to assist our members and informing them of content that contains the solution is just one of the many ways we try and help.
Have a great day.
I just registered solely for the purpose of telling you it is incrediblyannoying and unhelpful when on your so-called "support forum" you do not provide answers. There is no purpose in even having this forum when all you're going to do is tell people to look up the answer for themselves. What is the point of you even posting in here? All you do is point people to mindless KB articles that practically never fix the problem. We switched to Xerox six months ago and I have regretted it every day since.
Hi jcbreland,
Thank you for using the Support Forum. Please take a look at the solution for configuring scan to email. Step 23 addresses the DNS settings. If this information does not help please consider contacting your support centre for further assistance.
I have installed 8 or so work centre 7835/7845 and do not know how to verify the DNS server and the Host name of the machines. This is something new for the 7835/7845's and wasn't an issue with the 7535/7545's. It seems like after a few months or less the machine wipes the dns and host name and we have issues emailing from the printers. I am going to roll out another 20 machines and need some help with this issue. How do you verify the DNS Server and Host name of the work Centre.
Thanks,
