Hi jwoelfle,
I looked at the specifications for the machine and you are correct that the HVF is the one that comes standard with the WorkCentre 5790. Are you able to change the output to the output tray on the top of the machine? If not try disabling the HVF in the driver. Try this:
If this does not work then you will need to contact support or possibly service can change an internal setting or check the HVF to see why it is not working properly.
Thanks for the reply but it still does not answer my question. From the support article:
Offset Catch Tray (OCT)
The OCT can be installed on the WorkCentre models 5735|5740|5745|5755.
Basic Office Finisher
The Basic Office Finisher can be installed on the WorkCentre models 5735|5740|5745.
Office Finisher
The Office Finisher can be installed on the WorkCentre models 5735| 5740|5745|5755|5765|5775.
High Volume Finisher (HVF)
The HVF can be installed on the WorkCentre models 5740|5745|5755|5765|5775|5790.
Notice that the 5790 is ONLY referenced under the HVF. It is my belief that the other finishers would be backwards compatible but cannot find any documentation to back up my theory. I have brought up the question to my Supplier but the only answers I get are from the Sales SUpport team. And they are just reading the same articles/sales brochures I am.
Any other documentation or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi jwoelfle,
Thank you for using the Support Forum. There are several finishers available for the WC5790 please see this solution from the online support for your machine for information on the other finishers and the finisher specifications. To change the output location follow the instructions in the Modify the Default Output Tray solution. If none of this helps please consider contacting your support centre for further assistance.
Is the HVF(High Volume Finisher) the only option for the 5790? What about the Office Finisher, or even the simple Offset Catch Tray? Why would I be forced to use this HVF that can't seem to run more than 48 hours without a malfunction? Is there a way to tell the 5790 that there is no finisher attached at all and just let the prints fall on the floor? I'd actually prefer that to what I have now!
