Hello bdcanuck, 

If installing a new cartridge is not clearing the R1 replace message then it would be a hardware issue.  I do not recommend cleaning the old one with alcohol, please call into the support department for assistance @ 1-800-821-2797.

Hello all,

I have an old drum that at least prints, but it is pretty filthy and leaves black smudges on the paper. In my Other Supplies menu, it says that this drum (R1) is at 0% life left. I tried to change it with two brand new drums, but I'm getting a drum error and the printer won't print or copy anything while a new drum is installed.

1. Can I clean the old drum with alcohol wipes to get by?

2. What can I do do make the new drums work?
