I've got a Phaser 6500N I bought two years ago - only put 1,400 sheets through it so far. I'm getting "Invalid Toner" message with ANY new toner cartridge - in any of the CMYK slots. I've used genuine toner and compatible toner in the past. Now the printer is rejecting any toner I try to use - genuine or aftermarket.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You need an exact match from the same source as the first one you put in.
At 1400 prints, there should only have been at most one replacement for each slot.
Machines are sold by Xerox as null (Not locked to a region or as metered(On contract) vs sold (Retail))
When the original starter cartridge is empty (Good for about 1000 impressions) and you load the first replacement toner it becomes locked to the region and state of that cartridge, so if it was a North American and bought from Xerox to go in a machine that is on contract it would then be locked to North American and Metered.
If the toner was sourced from Asia and bought from a Store it would be Asia Pacific and Sold
The only way of resetting a device is to go through Xerox, and it is not easy to do so, they typically have 2 methods, and it depends on the device in question. They can reset it with a code that is generated using your Serial number and the exact amount of impressions printed at the time, or with a specially designed toner cartridge that resets the machine using a chip it contains that puts it back into the original neutral state. Neither option is free, and it isn't a pick or choose scenario, some devices are option 1, some are option 2.

I bought the printer and a high capacity black genuine xerox toner cartridge from Newegg at the same time.
The first cartridge I needed to replace was the yellow if I remember right - did that with an ebay special that could have been coded with the wrong area.

I really hate this coded toner thing. It's like buying a Ford vehicle and then forever having to buy your gas from Ford.
I can assure you, that with exception to the bean counters and share holders, Everyone agrees with you on that last note.
Just to add a further annoyance regarding all this, if the printer is out of warranty then Xerox will only send an engineer to unlock the printer and no other option.
The price they quoted to send the engineer here in the UK was nearly as much as what I paid for the printer new 8 years ago.
It's done 7700 pages only and the whole printer plus duplex unit will go to landfill. I will never buy another Xerox out of principle.
