I wouldn't advise doing that. Many times the machine has been coded to use X for a value of ram, and part of the upgrade kit involves changing X.
So you might add in 2GB ram , but the machine will still only list as running 1gb.

theres no way im buying a stick of RAM for $700+
when im sure its just some cheap old laptop RAM
that i can get for less than $20
