The words "just install the latest firmware on Xerox.com" is a link in the post to a much newer version than the 34540 release you are seeing. In fact it is 10 levels behind current, only General release information is available via search, so unless you click on my link I provided, you won't get the latest firmware.
And for the driver/Xtools, again, click the link and click the only driver available at it "AS400 Workstation Customization Object Library for Xerox Products" and it will show you the file name is indeed XTOOLS
Thank you for your reply but when I check on the latest firmware, 073.110.075.34540 is the latest version and that is what is installed on the printer.
When I click on the link you provided for XTOOLS, I am brought to the Drivers & Downloads with one Driver "AS400 Workstation Customization Object Library for Xerox Products" and two Firmware options "WorkCentre 6655i Automatic Upgrade 073.110.075.34540" and "WorkCentre 6655i Manual Upgrade 073.110.075.34540". Are either of these the XTOOLS? I then did a search on Xerox for XTOOLS, got no matches, went to the Xerox home page and did the search and also got no matches so I'm not sure how to access this.
That is i Series firmware, but isn't the latest, and again, install XTOOLS, follow the directions in the zip and you will absolutely have the 6655 as an option to use.
It looks as if we already have the proper firmware, no?

I think the issue may be which “Manufacturer Type and Model” to set it on the AS400 (there are no options for Xerox 6655 and apparently IBM knows there has to be some juggling as they are suggesting to use *HPn for Xerox printers) and was hoping there were other users out there that could confirm. Thanks!
We got a WorkCentre 6655, not a 6655i (this was a free replacement as our Phaser 8560 died so we didn't have a choice of model.) They are exactly the same printer, the only difference is that the ones with the "i" came with firmware that starts with 073, the non-i-series came with firmware that starts with either 071 (Connectkey 1.0) or 072 (Connectkey 1.5) And the firmware are all free updates, so if you want an iSeries, just install the latest firmware on Xerox.com
The printer works fine except will not print from the AS400 (iSeries). We keep getting the message "operator action required on device devname (c r)" on the AS400. While searching for a solution, I came across http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=nas8N1019526 titled "Information on Printers from Xerox and Fuji Xerox". Within it, it is stated "This document contains information on the capabilities that are supported on printer hardware from Xerox." and "Most PCL printers use port 9100 and regardless of the hardware, a PCL Manufacturer Type and Model, such as *HP4, *HP5SI, *HP4000, etc. will work."
I stopped the printer, varied it off, changed the type and model to *HP4, varied it on, started it and we still get the error. I rebooted the printer after this change, too, and that did not help either. Has anyone else run into this and have any suggestions?
