DocuColor 242 only uses one of the two black toners

Greetings. I'd like to open by stating this is not my machine but that of my mother's boyfriend. He, however, doesn't speak English, so I'm asking on his behalf. We also do not have access to the machine until tomorrow.
Right. The problem. The printer requires two black cartridges to work, and it only uses one. If you switch their places, it still only uses the one it used before the switch. If it's empty, it requires you to insert a new one, still leaving the unused one unused. This doesn't sound normal to me, and he says it's been like that since he got it. Are we missing something?

A quick update: Whilst copying a batch of 1,200 two-sided prints, K2 had 10 % when starting (K1 at 100 %), and after 411 copies it said to replace K2. K1 was magically at 90 %. Switching their places let us continue printing for another 600 copies, though then the machine started jamming after every two copies.
