How to stop the printer moving to the next tray

Open and close tray 2. 

You get a popup asking what you put in it.

Change the color of the paper from white.

Do the same from Tray 3. 

Now only one tray is programmed as (letter plain white) ie Tray 1, and all default jobs will print from it. When it runs out it will say resources required and not pull from T2 or T3 on driver default jobs

That is correct, Autotray switching is always used when you choose auto tray select. If you choose a tray, it will only print to that tray, because you said print on tray 2, it does, if you print to Plain White letter, it will print to any tray with it, and the first tray will be the one with the highest priority, then 2nd highest etc.

It is printing to a tray that doesn't contain that colour, so this is not the case.

The set up is that we have 3 trays in use, white, cream and green.  How we want it to work (and how it used to work) was that if we just clicked quick print it printed to tray 1 (and if tray 1 was empty it cried out until we fed it).  When we wanted to print to cream/green we went into the print screen and changed the paper to cream/green and it then printed to that tray with no further input (and if that tray ran out if again cried).

This is how it should work

But not how it IS working, hence this question.

What is happening now is if we click quick print it prints to tray 1, then when that runs out it moves to tray 2.  We do not want this to happen.

I know, but we have never needed to manually choose a tray before and it is a hassle to suddenly have to.

I found a similar question where the solution was to log in and go to paper/tray management, then disable auto selection.  However that means when people tell it to print to cream/green it says there isn't any (AND it still prints to tray 2 when 1 runs out...).

This setting would require you to choose the actual tray by its number

Can you suggest how to fix this please?  Each tray knows the paper colour it has in it (white/cream/green) so it doesn't make sense to me that a quick print (which is to A4/white/plain) ends up coming out on A4/green/plain.

There were specific firmwares with odd tray issues, it may be that they updated you to one that has this issue. The nearest I can think of was MS Word jobs had issues printing to printers with firmware 073.xxx.xxx.34540

We are still on 072 so the firmware was not updated last week.

#Edit# Interesting, just did a test run to make sure each person is having the same issue (they are), but the tray it goes to after 1 runs dry is tray 3, it skips 2...

This would be how it is set in tray priority at the device

Trays 1/2/3 are priority 40/50/60...

I would suggest updating to the latest firmware released December 6th

I have been around the office and everyone else uses their printer in the exact same way we do (just tells it to print to the colour and it finds the tray and stops if it can't find it), so I continue to be confused as to why our printer is apparently not behaving abnormally...
