If ink sticks were ever inserted while the machine is off the machine won't know they were inserted.
Yes, that makes sense, but it's a funny way of doing things.
A percent of how much ink was left would be much more useful, you could tell at a glance then roughly how many pages you had left.
I "think" the percentage indicates the amount that the inkloader has, not the usage of just one stick of ink. If you fill each of the four slots all the way to the top, it should show 100% or very close to it.

Understood - but why should a brand-new stick show as 40%?
you cant get 100%, because a stick will always be melted a little bit
I've just bought the 8570DN, which came pre-loaded with inkstix and a box of 1 of each colour.
Console message said the loaded stix were down to 10% once the Qube had warmed up.
Loaded the four unused stix - and these, the machine reported, were at 40% ...
Don't understand that. How can an unused stick not be 100%?
