Hooray! It worked! I installed the generic PCL driver, not the PostScript driver or the Xerox driver, and the Mac was able to send a print job to the Xerox successfully! 

I manually set up the printer, using the static IP address, left the queue blank, and chose PLD (Printer Line Daemon) for the protocol type. I then selected the generic PCL driver from the driver selection drop-down menu, rather than the Xerox driver, which the Mac had selected automatically.

There are some gotchas: I can only do basic printing to the default tray; I can't choose between trays or access some of the advanced printing features that the Xerox driver would provide, but at least I can print now.

Thanks for the response Mike! So when you used a generic HP laser driver, were you still able to choose which trays to print from when you had a document ready to print? Or is the generic driver choice just a temporary solution? Because I could definitely use that, even if I could only print to, say, the default tray, and not any other paper trays.

Hey all,

I have a Xerox Workcentre 5335 that our office recently upgraded to. Unfortunately, the Xerox techs forgot to include a Postscript module, so I cannot print yet, as I am running Mac OS X 10.8.4. Since it will take a few days for them to order one and have it delivered. I need to print right away, and I simply cannot wait until then, so I wanted to create a temporary solution. 

I have a backup Windows 7 desktop in the office that is set up to print to the Xerox. I wanted to know if there is a way I can print to the Windows machine from the Mac, and have the Windows machine route the job to the Xerox, since I have the PCL driver installed on the desktop.

Here's what I've tried:

I opened the Xerox on the Windows machine under Devices and Printers, and then navigated to Printer Properties. Under the Sharing tab, "share this printer" is selected. I then went back to the Mac, opened System Preferences, Print and Scan, and Add Printer. Under the Advanced settings, I selected Windows printer via spools. After entering the ip address of the windows machine, and the shared printer name, I finished the printer setup.

When I attempted to print a test page from the Mac, the system prompted me for the Windows user name and password. No problem, I entered the required credentials and fired away. However, although the job completed in the Mac print queue, the Xerox gave me an a couple of beeps and the dreaded 016-749 error.

I made sure I had the correct Xerox driver selected when I set up the shared printer, and I also tried using the Windows computer name, rather than the ip address, but no luck. 

What am I doing wrong? Is the print job failing because, even though I am printing to the Windows machine, I am using the PostScript driver on the Mac, so it will simply not go through to the Xerox anyway? I know the Windows machine is using the PCL driver, so I was hoping that the print job would be converted to the PCL-capable queue on Windows. 

Any advice would be most appreciated. I'm completely stuck, and I need to print posthaste!
