New 6510 wont properly instal (Linux Mint19.3)

Jump to solution
Product Name: 6510
Operating System: Linux

New printer bought because of advertised linux suport plus USB connection. 1 day wasted trying to connect via USB only to find deep in the manula Linux only supported via network.

Plugged in network cable from modem/router but nothing.

After mich internet reading and messing with Adin section on printer to no avail turned router off and on and found the printer was found as a network printer and apparently installed but would not print test page - Unable to locate printer message and jod left in print queue.

Powered  everything down overnight.

This morning dleted printer and attempted to set up again - setup app could not find network printer./

Powered router down and up with the same result as last night. Priinter apparently installed but but would not print test page - Unable to locate printer message and jod left in print queue.

Needless to say very disappointred and unless resolved the printer must be returned for something that works with USB & Linux - like the Brother it was supposed to replace.

Note using Admin menu the printer could not discover the TICP or whatever address. Have set the router firewall to minimum level.

If anyone can help thaks.

Just set the IP on the printer to something the router will accept and install the printer driver for this device on xerox.com using either either LPD or HP Jet Direct.

That is the problem=- nothing in the manual about what the router will accept and as a rather elderly end user I have no idea about all the gobeldy **bleep** involved with networking (that's why I wanted to use the USB).

To the best of my knowledge I have downloaded and installed the DEB drives from the Xerox site.

I will try what the screen grab shows but I have no idea what the device URI is or should be

Thanks.

Whichever of those two lower options I choose the box on the right still needs filling in and I have no idea what shoudl go in there. .

Still no idea about what to put into the printer that the router will recognise.

Many thanks for the trouble you took. Pitty the manufacturer and document writers took even less trouble.

1. The manual is now proven incorrect where it implies Linux is only supported via the network interface.

2. The manual needs some charts detailng eaxctly which buttons to press in which order to set up the printer options.

3. The manual needs to be much clearer  re the need to press the menu button to shut the printer down to allow the selection to be stored in NVM - like at the end of each "button press map" if there were any in one place.

4. The manual needs to be much clearer that the printer/driver considers USB to come under network connected printers.

5. The quick start sheets and the manual needs to make it perfectly clear that the printer ships with USB disabled and for USB connecion it needs enabling.

6. If Xerox are intent on their style of documentation and support you should ensure your printers can not eb sold to ordinary retail customers who will probably have limited networking and product knowledge.

So for any other new 6510 owners who are having problems (as the many reveiws show they are):

Rrember to enable USB connection in the printer admin settings.

Rememeber that USB connection is considerd as a network connection.

Remember that the 6510 is NOT listed in the standard Linux printer list even if you have downloaded and installed the .deb driver files. You have to choose soemthing like a 6380.
