Good morning,
I actually have the reverse of this problem - I have tray 2 and 3 set to different paper types [one "plain", the other "letterhead"], and when tray 3 runs out, it is pulling from tray 2. This ends up being a problem, as the user actually has letterhead installed in tray 2, so they are wasting custom printed pages. Should we be selecting the specific tray, instead of auto-selecting? I'm going to continue tinkering, inbetween working on other problems, but any clues would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Hello,
As long as your paper size and type are set the same on Trays 2 and 3 and you specify in the print driver to Automatically Select the paper tray, it should do this automatically.
If you select a specific tray that you want to print to in the print driver, it will not switch to another tray if that tray runs out of paper. So if you go into your print driver and tell it that you specifically want to print from Tray 3, it will not switch to Tray 2 if Tray 3 runs out of paper.
It will also not automatically switch trays if they are set to differet paper types like if one was set to plain and the other was set to cardstock (for example).

Hello.
I am having no luck setting up the Phaser 6180MFP to auto switch trays when one is empty. I have tried just about every setting i can think of. I have set the paper types to the same for both trays but still no luck.
I would like it to auto switch between tray two and three when one of the trays are empty. I prefer that tray three be the default but it doesn't matter too much as long as it will switch if possible.
Are there any specific steps to get this to work?
Thanks
