The answer to your question is right in the Phaser 6280 Knowledge Base here on Xerox.com/support.  Click here to get to the Knowledge Base and then type "Run black" (without the quotes) in the search field.  This will display the solution for how to set up your machine to run in "Run black" mode which is exactly what you're looking to do. :smileyhappy:

My 6280dn stopped printing because the magenta toner is empty. I don't have any spare toners in my office and my question is if there is a way to continue printing in black and white when the color toners are empty. I tried setting the settings to only print in black in white under printing preferences, but it still will not print. This is kind of bothersome even when trying to print in just black and white and not color.
