Phaser 6500 stopped double sided printing

You know you need to actually run the downloaded file right?

No, I didn't realize that.

When I execute the file, it asks for a port. Do I need to create a USB port? (there is a virtual USB port there already but I think it's for an Epson scanner I have installed).

If I need to create one, how do I do that?

Another question - once I've straightened out the issue about the port, I'll need to run the file again. Do I use APWinstal.bat?

There is no reason to choose a port, I think you are losing steps to this each time you attempt it.

As Quoted in my post

Select each and every 6500 driver one at a time and select Remove , choose Remove driver and package > OK

Then on the PC go to C:\Xerox and delete all files and folders.

Then download and run this driver and plug it back in (This puts the files needed in C:\Xerox, you need not bother with the setup portion)

When you plug the USB cable back into the device and PC, Windows will attempt the install automatically, it should prompt for which driver, at which point you would choose Have Disk and browse to C:Xerox and it will show only one file so you can't get it wrong.

Hi Joe,

OK, one more time.

I powered down the printer and unplugged its USB cable.

I've done a system restore (to just after my first install of the printer a couple of weeks ago), and deleted the driver.

I also deleted the contents of C:\Xerox

I clicked on the file P6500_4.2.8.56_English_x64.exe. This installed a new C:\Xerox. The first file in this folder is "APWinstall.bat" dated 8/2/16.

It also brought me to a prompt for "find a printer by other means ......"

What should I do at this point (note that while I was typing this, the prompt about "find a printer..." has disappeared)

Hi Joe,

to continue, I selected "add a local printer"

I then get a prompt "choose a printer port", either from an existing list, or "add a new port".

the existing list doesn't include a USB port for the Xerox, although there is one ("usb001") for the Epson scanner which I have installed.

the "add new port" selection has:

epsonnet print port

HP universal port monitor

local port

PDF 995 monitor

standard TCP/IP port

which (if any) should I select. I'm guessing "HP universal port monitor" (my PC is an HP). If so, what happens next?

note that every time I try something that doesn't work, I have to do a complete System Recovery plus several resets, to get rid of the existing printer and get back to square one. So far, I haven't tried to go beyond this point.

also, if I ignore this prompt at this poimt, and just restart the PC, it goes ahead and installs the old (single side) driver. The printer then works but prints single side only. Then, to get back to try the install again, I have to do a System Recovery and multiple resets as described above.

I tried "HPuniversal port monitor" but it just told me "not supported" so that's not the right selection !!

I'm reluctant to try anything else for fear of making things worse!

Hi Joe,

I've confirmed that the contents of C:\Xerox are what you sent me. To reconfirm, I'm including the directory of C:\Xerox at the end of this email.

In spite of this, when I plug in the printer, it gets allocated the single-side driver, specifically Xerox Phaser 6500N PS, and prints single-sided.

It looks to me that something is allocating this driver regardless of the contents of c:Xerox. Either that or I'm overlooking something obvious.

I'm beginning to think that I might have to give up and stick to single side printing.

Any ideas?

Right-click the start menu and go to Control Panel

Go to Devices and printers

right click the 6500 and go to Printer properties > Advanced (2) > New Driver (3)

Go to Next > Have Disk > Browse > Computer > C: > Xerox

Choose xrpsmpei.inf and click all the next, continue etc etc that appear.

When completed, go back into Printer properties and select the Device Settings tab and make sure Duplex Unit = Available

Hi Joe,

I did all that, and it still prints single side only. It shows double sided as "not available".

The printer driver is listed as "Xerox Phaser 6500 DN PS, x64, Type 3 - User Mode".

Is there any other configuration option I might have inadvertently activated? When I first installed the printer (for the first couple of days) it printed two-sided.
