Phaser 8550 asking for strange paper

When my printer is first started, it uses several sheets of paper. I have tray 1 loaded with Letter-size paper (8.5x11) and tray 2 with something else, usually Legal (8.5x14) but occasionally Letter-size.

The printer will eventually pass through a sheet and then ask me to load tray 1 with "special paper" of size 8.5"x11.53". This is total nonsense.

Why is the printer asking for that size paper, and how do I tell it that what it wants is what I have loaded?

Thanks.

Found this when googling 8.5 x 11.53 - does this help explain the odd size?

"Another perk is when using the 9300 series printer option of "Emulate
> LaserJet Margins". If you set a custom paper size of 8.5" x 11.53" this

Re: Phaser 8550 asking for strange paper

Thanks for the response Shawn, but, no, I don't think that is applicable in any way. My problem is driven by the sheets of paper that the printer itself creates as it warms up. I suspect it may have to do with the page the printer is formatting, somehow specifying paper larger than 11"in length.

I have loaded some legal paper in the printer. When I get back home next week I'll see if it will accept that size, and then I'm going to measure the image that is being created.

Re: Phaser 8550 asking for strange paper

BTT plus more information.....

Upon printer warm-up, the first sheet that is printed is the "Cleaning Page". This page is a full page of checker-board pattern of red/green/dark purple/black. The page includes a red bar at the bottom containing the  copyright information.

Then the printer prints the "Startup" page. This page includes an image of the printer and a list of all of the printer's built-in capabilities. At the bottom are logos for the various trademarks.

Below the trademark images is, once again, the red bar with the copyright information.

The problem arises on the Startup page. The image is too high to fit on an 11" sheet of paper. The bottom red bar is entirely past 11" and is what is causing the printer to be looking for the bogus 11.53" paper size.

I would very much like a resolution to this error. Are there any Xerox folks watching this forum?

Re: Phaser 8550 asking for strange paper

On the startup page, is the top margin correct?  It could be that the paper is not feeding at the correct time (too soon or too late).  Also, if using tray 2, is the rear paper stop set for the right size paper?  If the rear stop (or guide) is loose and moving when the paper tray is pushed back into the printer, it can activate the paper size sensor for the wrong size.  Does the Startup Page list the paper sizes on it (I don't remember if it does or not)?  If so, check what it thinks the paper size is for tray 2.

Thanks for the response, David.

Top margin appears to be o.k., no evidence of mis-feed.

Paper is properly loaded in tray 2.Stop is correctly positioned.

No, it does not. However, when I print a "Configuration" page, ot lists tray 1 as Letter and tray 2 as Legal.
