Hard to say. It could be lots of things. Usually it.is off brand or a metered vs sold ink.

As I have always used Xerox ink, is the problem likely with the ink loader itself?

Problem with the Black ink, most likely off-branded.

For reference, the last numbers should not be searched when you are trying to find faults solutions.

The 8185 is the copy count when the error occurred, and does not relate to the fault, so you got a FC 09,038.46 fault while, or just after printing page 8185 on this device.

Any suggestions on how to find out what this printer error means?

I suspect it means it is time to load this 8560 into the back of the truck for a trip to the electronics recycling centre.  

This machine has been one problem after another.
