Re: Versant 180 - Max paper size when printing without a server

Hello print1510W.

Thank you for using the Customer Support Forum.  I have engaged Hoa from the Asia Pacific Software Support team to assist with responses to your questions.

1. Where can I download the Versant 180 Print Driver for installation to my other pc?  http://onlinesupport.fujixerox.com/setupDriverForm.do?ctry_code=AU&lang_code=en&d_lang=en&pid=GX%20S...

Versant is one of a few machines that came with 2 printable DFEs (RIP/print server/controller). One inside the DMP controller (the touch screen on the printer used the internal RIP came with the IOT) and one via the external controller which can be Fiery, FFFP or GXPS. You need to install the correct driver and network/IP address of the right DFEs. Otherwise the driver will not display the correct setting and function of the respected DFEs.

 2. What max sizes can I print without a server on tray 1,2,3,5?

330x488 mm or 12x19”. Tray 5 can print 330x660 12x26” (banner print). This option won’t be available on DMP printer driver, only via GXPS printer driver.

3. What can I use as imposition software in place of the imposition capabilities of the server?

GXPS is tight to the RIP as like Fiery and FFPS. There is no standalone Imposition software like Fiery Impose. GX Print Station is like Fiery CWS which provide user to remote control GX. You can have as many GX Print Station installed on Client PC but up to 20 concurrent connection at one time (only Windows, no Mac at this stage).

You can do everything from GX Print Station included Imposition, Raster Viewer, Profile and calibration (can connect i1 into client PC and not required at the DFE). There is no license required so free to all GX Print Station.

4. What's the difference between printing with a server and printing direct from PC?

If you don’t have the GX/Fiery/Fiery connect to the IOT. It is possible to print via DMP but it is not a support configuration. Versant must sold with an external DFE connected for it to work fully. Normally we don’t recommend that you print via the internal DFE as it will not have the capability like the external DFE.

From PC/Mac you can use printer driver to print to GXPS or DMP (make sure correct driver installed and correct network connection to the right one on the printer).

If you print from GXPS printer driver, it will provide similar function as if you import the job from the UI. Printing from the driver allow you to print from any software application while at the UI, you can only import job that is a print file (PDF, PS, VIPP, PPML…etc)

5. Are there drawbacks in print quality if printing without a server?

Yes. 1st it is not a support configuration. 2nd DMP controller is very low spec. It can’t rip high resolution (600DPI) and does not have many features like external DFEs. Thus no colour management, no imposition (very basic), no job management (very basic), no special Image Quality function…etc.

6. What's a "hotfolder" alternative without a server?

Hotfolder is just another transfer file method to get a print job to the DFE. Thus if user has a PDF or PS and they want to send this file to the printer, they can put on USB and import the job at the GXPS or they can remote use HotFolder, FTP, web…etc to send the job to the printer. Hotfolder used Samba/CIF (Windows folder sharing) and thus common and easy for user to send print-ready file like PDF/PS…etc.

7. Anything else important that I need to know if I would be printing without a server moving forward?

Not recommended as this is not a support configuration.

Below are some things that you may have to check:

There are 3 different firmware (one for Japan, FXAP and US/Europe/DMO). They are specific tailored for CRUM and specific setting of the IOT and DMP to suite each region.

Thus if you are using the wrong firmware the DFE and IOT will not function correctly.

1. Check if the IOT is loaded with the correct version of firmware.  Your CSE or Analyst can check on their next visit.

    • If GXi is Japanese version, the IOT must be loaded with Japanese IOT firmware.
    • If GXi is a FXAP version, the IOT must be loaded with FXAP IOT firmware.
    • I don’t think we have created one for XC, so the firmware must be (a) or (b). Otherwise the icon on the touch screen will not show up.

The easiest way to see which firmware you used is looking at the languages option. If you only see English US and European countries, then it is US/European/DMO firmware version. If it has English, Chinese, Korean…etc then it is FXAP region. If it is Japanese then it is the Japanese version.

2. Wrong IOT firmware can cause mis-communication and configuration issue between DFE and IOT which could lead to what you have.

3. You would need to to download from http://onlinesupport.fujixerox.com/setupDriverForm.do?ctry_code=AU&lang_code=en&d_lang=en&pid=GX%20S...

Otherwise you would be using the wrong printer driver (DMP driver). This will not match the GXi Job Ticketing features and other settings. Versant is one of a few machines that included Print option in the DMP and thus you can print job via DMP and not only external DFE.

4. GXi by default included CPSI and optional APPE. If APPE is enabled, you need to download the PDF Printer driver. If no APPE, use the PS printer driver.

I hope this helps answer your questions.

Versant 180 - Max paper size when printing without a server

Product Name: Xerox Versant 180 Press
Operating System: Windows 10 x64

I've been having problems with the GXi Print Server since May 2018. The server was pulled out for inspection.

I do have the Versant 180 print driver installed on my PC by the technician way back. I couldn't print 13x19 with tray 1,2,3,5. I was however, able to print on A3 using Tray 1. I wasn't able to try the othe trays.

Since I could print without the server, I may try remove my reliance on needing a print server altogether.

My questions are:

1. Where can I download the Versant 180 Print Driver for installation to my other pc?

2. What max sizes can I print without a server on tray 1,2,3,5?

3. What can I use as imposition software in place of the imposition capabilities of the server?

4. What's the difference between printing with a server and printing direct from PC?

5. Are there drawbacks in print quality if printing without a server?

6. What's a "hotfolder" alternative without a server?

7. Anything else important that I need to know if I would be printing without a server moving forward?

Thanks in advance!
