WC 7830, Air Print, printing from iPhones issue

A Xerox 7830 has Air Print enabled, however none of the iPhones can find the printer on the network.  The phones are on the same network as the printer, and have the latest iOs installed.  Android phones are able to locate the printer with no problems.  Any ideas what could be causing this issue, or if there are special iPhone settings that need to be configured?

Re: WC 7830, Air Print, printing from iPhones issue

MOPRIA and Airprint are actually exactly the same thing, both are just prints over IPP. But Airprint is specific to Apple.

Assuming Airprint didn't just get disabled in CWIS already for some unrelated reason, try turning it off, then reboot and turn it back on, then reboot again and see if it becomes discoverable.

I can't imagine a scenario where you would have Apple devices on a different LAN than the Android, but open Safari on the iDevice and see if you can load CWIS, if you can't you won't be able to Airprint because you are not on the same network, or mDNS is failing, but that would apply to Andorid too.

And as an aside, if the firmware on the printer ends with .14201 Airprint and Mopria will have issues that will require a firmware update.

Re: WC 7830, Air Print, printing from iPhones issue

Joe--  Thanks for your reply.  The firmware they're running is 072.010.004.09100.  I instructed the customer to go into network settings on their iPhone and reset network connection, as this worked with someone else.  It did not do the trick.  Do you know if this firmware has any known issues with AirPrint?  Could an upgrade possibly solve the issue?  I do have a SPAR update, but that's the .14201 you said had problems.....at a loss for what to try next.

Re: WC 7830, Air Print, printing from iPhones issue

Here is the latest firmware with no known bugs, it is an 073 release, which is where the devices are all going now, so the Workflow scanning will have a new interface.

It is a tool installer so you just run it and it will do all the work, no need to upload to the printers CWIS page.

Re: WC 7830, Air Print, printing from iPhones issue

Sorry to report, this firmware did not fix the issue :(  If anyone else reading has any ideas of what could be causing the iPhones to be unable to print, please share!

So far, the following has been attempted:

*Enable AirPrint in CWIS

*Disable AirPrint, restart device, enable AirPrint, restart device

*Firmware upgrade to 073 version (latest)

*Reset network settings on the phones/iPad

The iPhones are able to pull up the machine on the network in Safari, so we know it is on the same network.  The iPhones are updated with the latest software.  Android devices are able to print with no problem, but apple devices will not even find the printer on the network.

Thanks!  And Joe, thanks for your replies thus far, they are greatly appreciated!

Re: WC 7830, Air Print, printing from iPhones issue

So I updated our iPad to the latest and all was working fine.

Oddly, if I then go and disable mDNS the printer is no longer working with iDevices but continues to work with MOPRIA, even though the CWIS page shows Airprint and MOPRIA to be disabled.

This is not the issue you have obviously, but it may lead to the cause, because if the Android device doesn't actually care about the mDNS setting that both protocols rely upon, it is possible that even though yours is enabled, it is in some way not working on the LAN. And apparently some routers automatically do so when going from Wired to Wireless networks, and since the printer is no doubt wired, and obviously the iPad/iPhones are wireless, it very well may be your issue.

Now in all honesty I am making assumptions and taking a leap here, but not an uneducated one.

In my testing I used a Nexus 4 with 5.1.1

Note 10.1 with 4.4.4

Nexus 5x with 6.0.1

LG g2 on 4.4.4 and G4 on 6.0

The only iDevice I could get was an iPad with iOS9.2

Re: WC 7830, Air Print, printing from iPhones issue

I updated a WC7830 that is going to be delivered tomorrow to the customer, from 072.010.004.09100 to 073.010.055.33800, using the Software Upgrade Tool you linked. It took a little more than 1h15 to complete the upgrade.

I tested it the whole afternoon and did't find any major issue.

  • AirPrint performed very well compared to the old system version
  • Mopria works as expected
  • Also cold start up is quicker (2 minutes 45 secs Vs almost 4 minutes)
  • Remote Panel is now working with Java 8-73 (tested on OS X El Capitan)
  • SMB Workflow scan, now works with OS X El Capitan even though this is less important, because SFTP scanning is a better choice with OS X, IMHO.
  • Xerox Mobile Link App (iOS and Android) is a great plus and works very well

Would you sugget to upgrade WC78xx and WC72xx to system 073.xxxx or is better to wait for the official release?

Re: WC 7830, Air Print, printing from iPhones issue

I always take the most recent release, so spar is almost always better. (If there wasn't an issue with a release, a spar would not have been made to fix it)

But keep watching for the next general release. It has some very shiny new features ;-)

Re: WC 7830, Air Print, printing from iPhones issue

Dear,

personally i don't think its a machine / firmware issue.. I'm more thinking it's a network structure issue..

Airprint works over wifi and uses bonjour. Verry important to work for bonjour is that your xerox MFP is in the same VLAN (same network range as your wifi) when not in the same range it won't work..
