Re: WPS PIN for Wi-Fi Direct on VersaLink C405dn

It is really annoying that we can't use Wi-Fi Direct with Windows 10 devices (Surface and many other 2-in-1 and laptops support Wi-Fi direct, and even PC wireless adapters), like with printers from other vendors, it is so convenient in many scenarios.

I bought a printer with Wi-Fi Direct exactly for use with my Surface and guests with 2-in-1/laptop, I was really surprised and disappointed when I found that Windows 10 is not supported!

Re: WPS PIN for Wi-Fi Direct on VersaLink C405dn

Not quite so Joe! To answer my own question: I have found a work-around, after learning something of how Wi-Fi Direct is supposed to operate and attempting various solutions. Install the printer in Windows 10 to a standard TCP/IP printer port at 192.168.3.100 [or whatever valid value you have set in the printer’s Wi-Fi Direct menu].

But Oh, for most users wouldn’t it be easier if the printer firmware could be configured to reveal the WPS PIN somewhere on the physical control panel or browser (Webserver) interface? - for example in the WI-Fi Direct menu or in a pop-up banner when Windows 10 asks for the PIN.

Tip: If the laptop is often connected to another network such that Wi-Fi Direct does not automatically reconnect at Windows start-up, try adding in the Windows Registry a fMinimizeConnections 32-bit-DWORD (default value 0) at HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WcmSvc\GroupPolicy. For more details of this, see https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/mobilebroadband/understanding-and-configur...

Re: WPS PIN for Wi-Fi Direct on VersaLink C405dn

WiFi direct is a mobile solution, it works on Android via MOPRIA (and it won't ask for a PIN)

Windows won't do it

Re: WPS PIN for Wi-Fi Direct on VersaLink C405dn

Hi,

I am trying to connect Windows 10 laptops to a VersaLink C405dn using Wi-Fi Direct. This would be very useful to us; but I can’t find the Wi-Fi Direct WPS PIN to complete the connection.

This post is a slightly more complete version of my previous query. Despite searching and trying numerous permutations, I still cannot find the Wi-Fi Direct WPS PIN!

The C405dn has Current Version firmware 68.50.61 installed on 26 Feb 2020. Logging on as admin at C405dn’s browser (web server) interface and selecting the Connectivity tab, I have enabled Wi-Fi Direct with the default IP address of 192.168.3.100 and naming the SSID “VersaLinkC405dn” (next after “DIRECT-**”) and specified the Passcode as “12345678” for now. (I will make the passcode less obvious when I’ve got Wi-Fi Direct working!)

The “DIRECT-VersaLinkC405dn” Wi-Fi network then became available to my laptop. I successfully connected to it using the 12345678 Passcode. Windows 10's Network and Internet Wi-Fi settings shows that Direct-VersaLinkC405dn has IPv4 address 192.168.3.101 (presumably allocated by the printer's Wi-Fi Direct DHCP Server). On the laptop, Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections shows that the Wireless Network Connection  for DIRECT-VersaLinkC405dn at 192.168.3.101 is working at 72.2 Mbps.

The WPS PIN problem comes with installing the printer itself. In Settings, Devices, Printers & Scanners on the laptop, and selecting “Add a printer or scanner”, “Show Wi-Fi Direct printers” offers “VersaLinkC405DN-DirectWiFi”. When “Add Device” is selected, it responds with a large blue dialogue box titled “Enter the WPS PIN for your multi-function printer” and also says “You can find the WPS PIN on your VersaLinkC405DN-DirectWiFi or in the info that came with it.”

Meantime on the printer's control panel, a bottom-line popup very quickly comes and goes. It says "Tap Device > About to confirm Direct Wi-Fi pairing request". No WPS PIN is shown or printed. Tapping the Device logo on the control panel has no effect. What am I supposed to "tap"? No option to tap is offered on my laptop: it wants me to enter a PIN.

WininfoView.exe (from www.nirsoft.net/utils/wifi_information_view.html) shows that WPS Support is configured for DIRECT-VersaLinkC405dn. Is there some way to deselect this support on the C405dn? WPS is not listed among the numerous protocols mentioned in the C405dn's Connectivity page.

I have tried 12345678 as the WPS PIN. Also the c405’s admin password. Both fail.

No WPS pin is shown on the standard Xerox Wireless Adapter 497K16750 attached to my C405dn. I can find no WPS PIN in the info that came with the c405 or Adapter. On the C450dn’s Control Panel, no WPS PIN is mentioned at Device, Connectivity, Wi-Fi Direct. This shows only the SSID, the IPv4 Address and number (0) of connections.

At the C405dn’s browser (web server) interface, no WPS PIN is shown under Connectivity, WiFi Direct (only the SSID and passcode). This where the WPS PIN was shown on the WorkCentre 6027 (www.office.xerox.com/userdoc/WC6027/phlink/wifi_direct.html).  Do I need to make a configuration change on the C405dn to make it appear there?

How does WPS work on the C405dn?

How please can I locate the Wi-Fi Direct WPS PIN or can I configure the C405dn to display it?

Or is the C405dn firmware incomplete for WPS? Xerox-sourced patch needed??

Any hints would be appreciated!

WPS PIN for Wi-Fi Direct on VersaLink C405dn

Product Name: VersaLink C405 Color Multifunction Printer
Operating System: Windows 10 x64

Does the C405dn firmware need a patch or other configuration to display the WPS PIN?
