I have just bought Phaser 3020 for home printing. It is connected with cable to my desktop computer, which has no WiFi device. The installation of the printer there was OK.
The problem came with the laptop (with XP). When I installed the printer and though the USB cable was connected I lost the internet, in fact it started to report speed=1Mbps. When I switched off the printer and "repaired" the connection, internet came back to normal. Another possibly useful detail is that a switched on printer, not connected to the laptop, makes no problem with the WiFi internet.
I read the manual, understood there were two methods (WiFi and WiFi Direct) but have not yet tried any of them.
Can you consult which one of the two methods will less probably enter into conflict with the internet.
I am afraid to experiment because if I spoil something with the router I would need to contact the ISP which would be unpleasant as hell.

You would connect to the network via WiFi.
WiFi direct is for mobile print from Android devices.
If it kills your internet I would assume it is being programmed with the wrong IP address (Most likely it is getting the same IP as your router.
Set it to DHCP before you connect it.
