Windows 2008R2 Printer Server drivers for 7428 printers not working well for clients.

We have setup a new WIndows 2008R2 print server and installed both 64bit and 32 bit drivers for all of our Xerox printers (7328, 7428, 5135, 9201).  for the 7428, we chose a PS driver.  However, when users print and change their preferences for paper size, double side, etc., they are ignored by the printer. 

 

We continued to troubleshoot this, and believe that is a driver issue with our Xerox 7428 printers (we do not have this problem our other Xerox models).  Here is what we know so far.

  1. Xerox 7428 printers did NOT work well with a PostScript driver (even though 7328 printers did work fine with their driver).  User selections to double side, change paper size, were all ignored by the printer.
  2. We tried the Xerox7428  PCL6 drivers specific for the printer, and winXP clients printed garbage.
  3. We tried the Xerox 7428 PCL5 drivers for the specific printer. This worked for 32 and 64 bit clients, but there was no "automatic" color setting, only color and black. 
  4. We tried the Xerox Global PCL 5 drivers and these seemed to work ok, although the server settings for auto color and banner off did not follow from the printer (needed to be set at the client).
  5. We tried the Xerox Global PCL 6 drivers and these seemed to work ok, although the server settings for auto color and banner off did not follow from the server to the client (needed to be set at the client).  The users also claim that double sided printing flips the paper differently than before.

At this point, we are staying with the Xerox Global PCL6 driver for our Xerox 7428 printers.  If anyone has some suggestions for further testing/troubleshooting so that we could end up with a driver that allows the client to perform the normal printer preference overrides on printing for double side, paper size, etc., it would be greatly appreciated.

A couple of suggestions for this issue:

Focusing on scenario number 2 that you wrote -

The PCL6 driver for the Xerox 7428; try making a print to file on the client and then submit that job to the device by using the web interface CWIS (CenterWare Internet Services).  This is to determine if there is corruption up front or somewhere down the print path (for instance, at the server.)

You could also try sending the 74XX PCL6 job to a 73XX device, just to see if something is not correct in the 74XX interpreter.
