WorkCentre 4250 - Win7 x64 - Printer Properties open after 15 minutes!

Jump to solution

Hi, we have 2 Xerox WorkCentre 4250 on the floor that are giving me a big headache. The problem is that when the users, and I mean multiple users here, try to access the printer properties from Word for example the application just froze. I can duplicate the problem very easily. For example, I open the "Device and Printer" panel. Then I right click the printer "Xerox WorkCentre 4250" and click on Properties. It can now take up to 15 minutes to get the printer properties window to show up. So the vast majority of users think that the computer have a problem and then call us. So far I tried this:

1- Reinstall the driver

2- Switch to a new driver (PCL5, PCL6, PS)

3- Delete the printer and reinstall it

4- Switch from LPR to RAW

5- Check the network for a possible problem

6- I also tried to disable the Bi-Directional communication on the driver. It helps a little bit but the problem is still very present.

And I know that the problem isn't the computer itself because the users are able to print normally, open the print properties from any other printer installed on the computer (HP,Xerox,Lexmark, etc.), etc. In fact, the only way I found to "patch" this so far is to delete and recreate the Windows profile of the user! With some users I even did it 3 times already. So what is so special about the Xerox WorkCentre 4250????? Is it Windows 7 x64 compatible? Do I need to install some specific Microsoft patch to make it work on a Windows 7 Ent SP1 French computer? I really need help here!

Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi GBoucher,

Thank you for using the Support Forum. Please try using the Global Print Driver and see if this makes the difference for you.  Also please make sure that your firmware is up to date on your machine.  If the problem continues please consider contacting your support centre for further assistance.

Thanks,

We have the exact same issue you described!   It could take 10 seconds or 10 minutes for the properties to change in MS Word.  Neither time is acceptable.   Luckily we only have 1x 4250 left in our fleet.

I've tried:

1. Deleting all the 4250 and Xerox GPL drivers from the Windows 7 Print Manager.  Not the easiest thing to delete because you have restart the spooler and click delete at the right second...

2. Using Process Monitor from SysInternal to find the registry key to delete it.  I think this worked for us once before, but I don't remember the reg key to delete).

Thanks

Had the exact problem with a Win7 x64 desktop.  Tried every driver for the machine including GPD versions two generations old.  In any application attempted small print jobs would take 10 to 15 minutes to spool and when attempting to access properties from devices and printers it took about 5 minutes for them to finally show themselves.  When attempting to get to properties or preferences from different application like word, adobe acrobat reader, or Internet Explorer it would take 10 to 15 minutes. Finally was able to work around the issue by Disabling SNMP status in the port configuration in conjunction with turning off the bidirectional communication and turning off the job notification in the properties of the print driver.  You will of course have to manually configure the printer accessories when this is done.   Hope this helps someone as I spent over 3 hours before I stumbled onto a workaround for this instance.  Still not sure if it is a driver issue or a windows issue?

Thanks Jet!   I'll try your steps the next time this happens again.   The user said it is working a lot better for her so I'll leave her alone.  I guessing it was a key I deleted in the registry that helped.

When we were runnig WinXP 32 bit drivers this never happened to any of our users.

Xyirx: it has been a while sorry, I can't remember which key.

Try this:

1. on the affected Windows Profile

2  install Process Monitor from MS System Internals

3  Go into a MS Word document

4.  Launch Process Monitor, apply 'Show Registry Activity' filter

5.  Go into the Print Properties of the Word Doc... Process Monitor should spit the clues...

I am counting the days when our rental agreement expries with this 4250.
