Workcentre 7232 font quality problem with PCL6 drivers

Jump to solution

I have Xerox Workcentre 7232 MFP and have had some problems with the drivers. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit and the printer is connected through Ethernet cable.

1. It seems that by default WC 7232 doesn't support postscript and won't work with windows postscript drivers and you need to buy separate Postscript Kit in order to use PS drivers. Am I correct?

2. PCL6 drivers seem to work for most part, but the print quality isn't perfect since there is a visibile jagged edge in small fonts. Print resolution is fixed to 300 dpi and I can't find a way to alter it, even though WC 7232 is capable of 600 dpi. Is the resolution really fixed or is there some way to alter it?

3. I have been able to get precise print quality with XPS and native Windows Class drivers. Options of these drivers are however bit limited. So, in order to get good print resolution, are these my options? Is there a reason to prefer one over the other?

4. Do XPS and Class drivers communicate with the printer using PCL6 or is there some other way?

Hi Willie,

Thank you for using the Support Forum.  To answer your questions:

1. Yes you need the Postscript kit to print with postscript.

2. Try printing using the High Quality selection under the Print Quality option in the Printing Preferences and see if that helps with the jagged edges.

3.  You can use the XPS and native Windows driver.  You can also try the Xerox Global Driver.  There is really no reason to use one over the other it is personal preference.

4.  I am not sure on how they communicate I would suggest that you please consider contacting your support centre for further assistance.

Thanks,

In my personal experience I suggest the PCL driver over the PCL6 driver.

Then in the "Printing Preferences" go to the "Advanced" tab and confirm draft mode is off

Then set "Print optimization to off.

True type font to "Download as softfont"

On the "Color Options" tab, you will get better color from properly formatted color docs if "Color Correction" is set to "none"

But for typical printing things will look better with it on, completely depends on what you print.

Caveats:

You will not get the quality of color the PS engine is capable of no matter what settings you use.

For more details and for file testing you would need to call for 2nd level support, they should be able to solve the issue over the phone, they may have an entirely different way to do so.

Thank you for your replies. I will try your suggestions and get back.

Currently the situation is that I get premium quality when printing straight from Word (for example) using XPS driver in Windows 7, but if I convert these documents into PDF using Acrobat and then try printing them with XPS driver the font quality is not the same. So currently I haven't been able to print PDF's in premium quality using any Windows 7 drivers.

My current solution is to print using Class Drivers on my Windows 8 machine. They seem to produce excellent quality prints from PDF documents I've created.

So currently my problem is just with Windows 7. But I'm also curious on what causes the reduction in quality, if it's in the configuration or the drivers itself.

JOE053204-xrx,

Thank you for the instructions again, but unfortunately they didn't resolve my issue. I can upload scans from the documents to clarify the issue, but currently my resolution is to use Class Drivers on Windows 8 and XPS drivers on Windows 7 and print PDF files from my Win8 machine when possible.

Downgrading my drivers to the Microsoft Sertified PCL (not sure about PCL6) drivers version 5.99.3.0 dated Oct 10, 2008  seems to have resolved the problems! They also seem somewhat faster than the new drivers (5.347.6.0) which seem to be the cause of the problem.

Interesting enough, in these old drivers the resolution seems to be locked at 600x600 dpi as opposed to the 300x300 dpi of the new drivers. Don't know if it's related, though.

Setting Print Optimization on or off or changing the font download setting doesn't seem to affect the quality of the documents I'm working on.
