Xerox Versalink B7030- User authentication Method

Product Name: Xerox Versalink B7030
Operating System: Windows 10

Dear Sir/Madam,

We have a Xerox Versalink B7030 for a workgroup of 10-15 people. My question is that can we use the swipe card for the user authentication? and if it is possible, is it mandatory to have a LDAP or Active directory? or we can have local users in the Xerox machine and use swipe card for authentication?

a prompt response would be highly appreciated.

Thanks,

Shervin

Re: Xerox Versalink B7030- User authentication Method

Hello
Thank you so much for your reply. So let me confirm with you to make sure; as I understand, if I use smart card authentication, I can take the advantage of Hold/Release print with card authentication locally at the machine and there is no need for authentication server? in other words, we can create some users on the copier machine locally and the authentication with be done at the control panel of the machine by the user name and password inside the smart card without the need for authentication server.
Am I true?
May I have the same solution with RFID card reader as well? as I understand for the RFID-Card authentication, it is mandatory to have an authentication server.
Any idea in this regard would be highly appreciated,
Thanks,
Shervin

Re: Xerox Versalink B7030- User authentication Method

The answer to your question is no. All card based authentication methods will require network authentication to occur. The requirements for different card based authentication types vary, but none can be done on box. You can review the "Configuring Authentication Settings" section in the system admin guide at the link below.

System Administrator Guide

In the section pertaining to smart card authentication it is required to configure a hostname or IP of a domain controller.

The section pertaining to convenience cards (RFID, magnetic) describes that an authentication protocol is required (Kerberos, AD, LDAP).

Based on what you have asked you may be interested in the Xerox Workplace Cloud software solution.

Re: Xerox Versalink B7030- User authentication Method

Thanks for your information. So it means authentication server is a must for both RFID card and smart card authentication. So should I have something like papercut software or Xerox work space suit ? Or I can implement it without them using windows server services ?
The requirement is only to have a print management service that users can prints when they authenticate at the device.
Sorry for asking many questions.

Re: Xerox Versalink B7030- User authentication Method

Xerox Workplace Suite/Cloud or PaperCut is my recommendation. If your desire is to provide the requested functionality without local infrastructure then Xerox Workplace Cloud is my recommendation. PaperCut does have cloud offerings as well but they are still in beta. If you want to do this entirely DIY then I'm inclined to recommend PaperCut's cloud offering called PaperCut Pocket even though it's in beta. Xerox's offering is very good but without someone trained in it to assist you with the setup it is likely to be challenging to setup. PaperCut's offering should be configurable by any IT professional without too much trouble.

I don't think that a hold and release workflow can be setup without an intermediary software to manage the jobs, but it's not out of the realm of possibility. I only have experience utilizing the 2 solutions that we have mentioned to accomplish that.

Contacting your local Xerox dealer to discuss your equipment and environment in detail to help decide what will ultimately be the best solution for your business is recommended.

Re: Xerox Versalink B7030- User authentication Method

I appreciate your time and information you shared with me. Actually i need saverless print management service but i can not use cloud based one due to the machines are not connected to the internet. Papercut has server less pull print (print deployment) but in that case i think we can only print without authenticate on MFDs. Am i true ?
I searched and found that Fuji Xerox has a server less solution called server less on demand print , does Xerox support same solution ?

Another question what is the advantage and difference between smart cards and RFID card authentication
Thanks

Re: Xerox Versalink B7030- User authentication Method

Print Deploy in PaperCut is the component that helps, as the name implies, deploy printers to computers. It's separate from the authentication component. PrinterLogic is popular and well established for that functionality as well. Without the MFD being connected to the internet you're right about cloud solutions being out as an option.

As for the advantages/disadvantages of various card systems that is out of my realm of knowledge. Everyone that I have supported already had existing card systems in use and therefore there was no consideration about types of cards.

I'm based in the states, so I can't comment on Fuji-Xerox offerings intelligently.

We have probably reached the limit of support that can be provided via this forum, unless another community member wants to chime in, and a consultation from a local Xerox organization is highly advised. Consultations don't cost anything and they can get further into all of the nuances with you then we can via this forum.

Good luck!
