It could be password protected and using a renamed community. That would be enough security. In terms of internal management for new firmware deployment, it's a big hurdle.
I would imagine it can't be done via SNMP purely for the reason that it would make it ridiculously easy to script something to load modified code (Virus/Trojan)

I would like to be able to remotely enable the software download bit with SNMP instead of going through the web interface of each machine with their IP address. I have more than 300 to do a firmware upgrade and they are Phaser 3610 or 6600.
I found the OID in question (.1.3.6.1.4.1.253.8.74.6.2.1.7.2.101.143.1) but it's read only when I use the private community and returns "Failed to set value to SNMP variable" when I use internal as community.
Anyone knows how to set this bit so I can include this command in my printer firmware upgrade script?
