Our office recently acquired a B405, but we are unable to scan to any of the computers on the network. We are able to scan to a USB thumbdrive that we plug into the B405, but that is a time consuming process. We tried a couple of options listed on the machine, such as Scan To \ Network and Scan To \ Contacts. I read through the instructions on this forum about how to set up an address book, which I assume is the first step in the Scan To \ Contacts approach. The instructions were very complicated. So we tried the Scan To \ Network but when we click on this, we receive an error that says Unexpected communications error. Cannot browse at this time. I don't think there is anything wrong with our small network. We are able to print to the B405 with no problem.
Basically we are looking for the simplest method possible to reliably scan to computers on our small network. Solutions are welcome.
Instructions are going to be complicated because there are simply too many things to consider.
SMB is different than FTP, and we have no idea what you want to use or have set up.
We also don't know if you are an admin of your PC
We also don't know if you are running Windows/Linux/OSX on your PC.
We also don't know your network setup, so we don't know if the printer is set to have the right Gateway or subnet, or if there is a proxy.
Once all of the above is provided, you can get pretty detailed instructions, but if we don't know, you get very complicated instructions, and if you need detailed instructions on how to get all of the above, then you get a novel sized writeup of very complicated instructions.
The machine setup once everything is sorted client side is ridiculously simple, for SMB the following is all I need to set on the printer.
IP/Address:port 192.168.1.165:445 (The IP of my computer and the default smb port)
Share XeroxScan (The folder I shared via SMB on the PC)
Login Name firstname.lastname@example.org (The username I use to access the PC, which is runing Windows 10)

As I described in my original post, when I try to access or setup network connections on the printer, I hit Scan To \ Network. The printer then says it is Browsing SMB, then returns the message Unexpected communications error. Cannot brows at this time. Check the network connection. However, we are able to print to the printer. What solution do you recommend?
Typically you would set it in the Addressbook, exactly as I show in the screenshot, albeit with your login, IP and share name.
And due to Win 10 not actually showing your login name or ever asking you to type it, you should pull it from in the brackets shown here in the share properties.
I have recently attempted to set up SMB scanning for a client and I am left scratching my head:
Why does the Xerox interface not support hostnames for the SMB destination?
Every other scanner brand and model that I have deployed (Canon, Ricoh, etc) support hostnames for network scan locations.
Given that some of us don't want to have to assign static IPs for what could be dozens of computers on a network that could be scan destinations, when will Xerox program in hostname support?
What are you talking about? It is shown that hostnames are supported in the screenshots above (old firmware) and it still very much is today as seen here.
